Dear Sir/Madam
As a Member of Parliament, you are aware of your principal duty, which is to write laws which affect the Western Australian public. The law is the foundation of having a cohesive and functioning society.
Members of the taxi industry suffered incredible losses both financially and emotionally when UBER were given the green light to operate in this state and from day one, operating outside of the law. They assumed (correctly) that there would be no price to pay for flouting the laws which you as a Member of Parliament created.
In any situation where the Laws are broken, someone pays the price and that price was paid by the hundreds of taxi plate owners who in good faith paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for taxi plates which were sold by the government or bought privately “knowing” that their commitment would be backed up by the most important institution in this state, the Government of Western Australia.
The result of UBER’s decision to come to Western Australia is many faceted.
Firstly, they have assumed that they would suffer no legal penalty for operating illegally in the taxi industry.
Secondly, the $120,000,000 pa that UBER collect in this state is taken offshore, to Amsterdam for processing. The gap between what leaves this state and what is returned to the “UBER “partners” is lost to the local economy.
Thirdly this state’s finances take a blow due to the fact that $20,000,000 in annual fees and charges that the legal taxi industry pays, are put in jeopardy because of the industry’s inability to operate viably.
The Micro Business Party would like to ask you the following two questions.
1. Do you support fair compensation (buyback)to taxi plate owners?
2. If you do support compensation, what do you think a fair level of compensation is? (Given that the taxi plates were valued at $295,000 at the time of UBER’s decision to operate illegally in Western Australia)
